Mousavi Cancels Tehran Rally, Cops Teargas Students

Mir Hossein Mousavi called off a major rally in Tehran today after the supposedly defeated presidential candidate was told that militias with live rounds would be standing guard, reports the BBC. Heated clashes are continuing between the police and Mousavi supporters disputing the declared election results. Security forces reportedly fired tear gas and began searching rooms at the capital's university today. Calls of "death to the dictator" echoed throughout Tehran.

The government declared any protests against the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad illegal. A source at the interior ministry warned that "seditious elements" who attended a rally "would be dealt with according to the law." Mousavi recently met with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country's supreme leader, though Khamenei is highly unlikely to accept the candidate's request to void the election results, reports AP.
