THE WORLD TRADE CENTER complex (WTC) consisted of seven buildings and six below-ground levels, spread across approximately 16 acres. 1 WTC and 2 WTC were the Twin Towers (north and south respectively). 3 WTC was the Marriott Hotel, and 4 and 5 WTC were low-rise commercial office buildings.

The Port Authority police desk was also located in 5 WTC. 6 WTC, a low-rise structure, served as the headquarters for US Customs service in the region. 7 WTC was a high-rise office building, located across Church Street from the main 16-acre site, to the north. Buildings 1-6 were connected by an underground mall (the concourse), which was the largest enclosed shopping center in New York City. Below-ground levels contained public parking, mechanical equipment rooms, and the WTC Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) railroad terminal.

The WTC site has been owned by the Port Authority of NY & NJ since it was authorized by the states of New York & New Jersey in 1962. Construction of the complex took place between the years 1965-1974 and tenants began to occupy space in the towers in December 1970.

The Twin Towers, each 110 stories, were once the world's tallest buildings.

The Towers rose to 1,368 and 1,362 feet and were each 110 stories. The Towers were the world’s tallest buildings until the Sears Tower in Chicago surpassed them in 1974.

Approximately 50,000 people worked at the World Trade Center, in roughly ten million square feet of office space. Another 40,000 people passed through the complex daily. On July 24, 2001, management of the WTC complex was transferred by net lease to a private developer, Silverstein Properties, Inc (SPI). Prior to that time, the Port Authority operated the majority of the complex, though it did not operate the Marriott Hotel, 6 & 7 WTC (7 WTC was already owned and operated by SPI), and space within private tenant leaseholds.
